🚌 Exploring Singapore with the City Sightseeing Bus Tour

A Fun, Easy & Family-Friendly Way to Discover the Lion City

If you’re visiting Singapore for the first time — especially with kids — one of the best and most stress-free ways to explore the city is by hopping on the Singapore City Sightseeing Bus Tour! 🚍🌇

We recently spent the day riding the open-top bus through Singapore and it was one of the highlights of our trip. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, we got to see so much of the city without worrying about directions, MRT changes, or tired little legs. Best of all? The kids loved it — wind in their hair, views from the top deck, and plenty to point out along the way.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own hop-on-hop-off bus adventure in Singapore (and yes, you can book it easily with our link!). There are Over 32 stops / 2 routes - City & Marina Routes, where you get to do unlimited hop-on hop-off sightseeing and enjoy the flexibility of a single-day pass and take stunning photos of Singapore from the upper deck of the bus with audio commentary.

📍 What Is the Singapore Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Tour?

The Singapore City Sightseeing Bus Tour is a hop-on-hop-off double-decker bus tour that follows multiple routes around the city. You can ride the full loop or get off at the attractions you want to visit — then hop back on when you're ready. It’s a super flexible way to explore!

There are two main routes:

  • Yellow Line (City Route): Covers Singapore’s historical, colonial, and shopping districts

  • Red Line (Heritage Route): Takes you through cultural neighbourhoods like Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam

🗺️ Our Route & Highlights

We boarded the bus in the China Town area and stopped off at Marina Bay area this was where we did our picnic with a view so saved on the days' transport costs for the whole family, and chose to do the Yellow Line loop first to get our bearings. Here are some of the awesome places we saw from the top deck:

  • 🏛️ National Gallery & City Hall

  • 🛍️ Orchard Road – Singapore’s famous shopping belt

  • 🌆 Clarke Quay – buzzing riverside nightlife area

  • 🎡 Singapore Flyer

  • 🌿 Gardens by the Bay – perfect photo ops of the Supertree Grove (and don't forget the night time light show here. Although the return bus will have finished by then. Worth an MRT ride or taxi ride home though. The light show is wonderful with kids.

  • 🏯 Chinatown & Sri Mariamman Temple

  • 🕌 Sultan Mosque in Kampong Glam

  • 🐘 Little India – bursting with colors and street art

After completing the full loop, we hopped off at Marina Bay Sands for a lunch break and a quick visit to the observation deck!

⏰ Tour Duration & Timings

  • Full loop: Around 2 hours if you stay on

  • Operating Hours: Typically from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM

  • Frequency: Every 20–30 minutes

We recommend starting early in the day to make the most of your ticket and have time to hop off at a few spots.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Is It Good for Kids?

Absolutely! Our kids loved being on the top deck. It gave them a fresh view of the city, kept them engaged, and gave us all a little break from walking. You can bring snacks and water on board, and there’s shade on most buses too. It sounds cheesy but this really was one of the highlights of our trip. It allowed us to get a feel of Singapore taking in all of the amazing and varied sights. In the short time we had 72 hours in Singapore - we'd never have had the time to see all of the sights.

💡 Tips for Taking the City Bus Tour in Singapore

  • Bring headphones: Some buses offer audio commentary (or use the app!)

  • Wear sunscreen and hats: Especially on the top deck

  • Download the map beforehand to plan your stops

  • Combine routes: You can ride both the Yellow and Red Lines in a day. We did both. Your ticket covers both so why not set out early and get your monies worth! ;-)

  • Bring a drink. On the second day we stopped off at a juice vendor in China Town and took on a cold drink as we viewed from the top deck. We felt like pro's by this point. And all the newbises wished they were us sipping from our ice cold cups. Be more like this - you won't regret it!

  • Take breaks: Hop off at The Singapore Botanical Gardens or Chinatown for lunch/snacks

👍 Why We Recommend It

As a full-time travel family, we’re always looking for easy, value-packed experiences — and this one ticked every box. We got a city-wide overview, didn’t have to plan much, and saw so many places in just a few hours. Perfect for short stays, layovers, or first days in Singapore!

So, if you’re looking for a fun, flexible, and family-friendly way to explore Singapore — we can’t recommend the City Sightseeing Bus Tour enough.
