Our Favourite Temples of Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is home to over 300 temples (wats), making it one of the most temple-dense cities in Thailand! 🛕✨

These temples range from ancient ruins dating back to the 13th century to beautifully restored and still-active places of worship. Many are located within the Old City walls, which was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, while others are scattered throughout the surrounding hills and countryside.

This page is under construction after our 2025 long stay in Chiang Mai we are refreshing the page with the up to date info on opening times and info to know before visiting each temple in Chiang Mai.

Notable Temples in Chiang Mai Include:

  • Wat Phra Singh – Known for its classic Lanna architecture and revered Buddha image.

  • Wat Chedi Luang – A partially ruined but majestic temple with a fascinating history.

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – Iconic hilltop temple with panoramic views of Chiang Mai.

  • Wat Umong – Forest temple with ancient tunnels and a peaceful, meditative vibe.

  • Wat Lok Moli – Beautiful brick chedi and lesser-known charm near the north gate.

🛕 The Best Temples to Visit in Chiang Mai – Plus Monk Chat & a 1-Day Meditation Retreat with Monks

Chiang Mai, often called the cultural capital of Thailand, is a city of over 300 temples, or wats, making it one of the most spiritually rich destinations in Southeast Asia.

As you wander the Old City or explore the forested hills, you’re never far from a golden stupa or the gentle hum of chanting monks.

In this guide, we’re sharing the must-visit temples in Chiang Mai, plus two unforgettable experiences: the chance to talk with Buddhist monks at a Monk Chat, and a 1-day meditation retreat where you can learn from monks in a peaceful, reflective setting tat we think everybody should do during their next visit to Chiang Mai (which was definitely the highlight of our recent trip).

🗺️ Top Temples to Visit in Chiang Mai

Perched high above the city, Wat Doi Suthep is the most iconic temple in Chiang Mai. The 309-step staircase flanked by mythical nagas leads to a golden chedi that gleams in the sunlight. On a clear day, the panoramic views over Chiang Mai are spectacular. It’s a spiritual must-see and a great place to start your temple exploration.

2. Wat Chedi Luang

  • 📍 Location: Old City, Chiang Mai

  • 💰 Entry Fee: 50 THB

  • 🕰️ Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Once the tallest structure in Chiang Mai, this temple houses the crumbling remains of a massive chedi damaged in an earthquake in the 16th century. It’s dramatic, photogenic, and steeped in history. The temple grounds are peaceful and centrally located—perfect for a relaxed visit during a day of wandering the Old Town.

3. Wat Phra Singh

4. Wat Umong

  • 📍 Location: Foothills of Doi Suthep

This whitewashed temple with a striking collection of royal tombs and stupas is also home to Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya Buddhist University, where many monks study—and where you can experience the Monk Chat!

🧘‍♂️ Monk Chat: Meet the Monks

One of Chiang Mai’s most meaningful cultural experiences is the Monk Chat program. It’s a casual, open conversation between travelers and monks where you can ask questions about Buddhism, Thai culture, or monastic life.

📍 Where: Wat Suan Dok or Wat Chedi Luang

🕰️ When:

  • Wat Suan Dok: Monday–Friday, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

  • Wat Chedi Luang: Daily, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

💬 What It’s Like:

We visited Wat Suan Dok, where we spoke with Monk K.K., a young monk fluent in English, warm and curious. He shared insights into his daily life, the Eightfold Path, and how he came to the monastery. These sessions are free, and the monks join to practice their English while offering valuable perspectives.

🌿 1-Day Meditation Retreat with Monks

For a deeper experience, you can join a one-day meditation retreat run by monks from the university at Wat Suan Dok. It’s ideal for curious beginners and families with older children.

📍 Where: Wat Suan Dok Meditation Center

🕰️ Time: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (usually on Tuesdays or Thursdays)

💰 Cost: Donation-based (suggested 200–300 THB includes lunch and shuttle)

🙏 What to Expect:

  • Learn about Buddhist philosophy

  • Practice walking, sitting, and lying meditation

  • Share lunch in silence

  • Ask questions and reflect with a monk teacher

It’s a beautiful opportunity to slow down, observe your thoughts, and connect with Thai Buddhist traditions firsthand. Dress modestly and bring an open heart.

🧡 Why We Loved Exploring Chiang Mai's Temples

Our family loved temple-hopping around Chiang Mai—not just for the stunning architecture and history, but for the moments of calm it brought to our trip. Watching monks sweep leaves at sunrise, listening to chanting echo through ancient halls, and talking openly with a young monk about mindfulness were unforgettable highlights.

Whether you're visiting for a few days or longer, take the time to slow down and soak in the spirituality that makes Chiang Mai so special.
