HOW TO USE PINTEREST FOR Generating BLOG TRAFFIC (THE SIMPLE, MODERN SYSTEM)
Before we continue it's really important to understand what Pinterest is and what Pinterest is NOT. So, Pinterest is NOT social media like many think. Pinterest is actually a visual search engine.
So whenever you think in terms of your blog and Pinterest, be mindful that it's as important as doing your Google SEO. People get caught up with pleasing Google and that's great as far as SEO goes.
But do not sleep on Pinterest because promoting each and every blog on Pinterest is an amazing free and fast tool to utilise to get every blog post out there and seen. Because users go there to find ideas, not follow people.
What this means for you and I:
✔ Your Pinterest account doesn’t actually need followers for it to work for you.
✔ Your content lasts YEARS instead of hours because of the nature of this huge visual search engine.
✔ Every pin can bring traffic on autopilot. Post the content once and keyword it accordingly to generate free monthly traffic that compounds month on month.
✔ Pinterest is definitely the fastest traffic source for new blogs in our opinion. When Google can take months to rank a new blog. You could be writing for months without a single soul seeing your beautiful words and content.
With Pinterest you can post your content in the way of a visual guide and this can rank immediately in front of millions of potential searchers. This is Why using Pinterest is our proven go to SECRET tool.
And to make sure you're using Pinterest properly, you'll need to follow a system. I know I know blogging is meant to be freedom and free of rules.... follow the system / rules to create a freedom life. That's he freedom.
So, to use Pinterest properly, below you'll find the system we follow and we share here today so you can follow and take your blog to stratospheric new heights. You'll find that long term that SEO eventually will be the biggest driver of traffic to your blog BUT this takes time to get established and it takes consistency to grow your blogs search engine traffic.
With Pinterest, you can get traffic from day one and grow fast – even without a large number of followers.
So if you want help getting your blog in front of millions of people, don’t know where to start, then read on... I’ll show you step by step our system to getting started and setting yourself up for traffic success on Pinterest.
STEP 1 — Pinterest Keyword Research
Pinterest SEO is exactly like Google SEO, but it's visual and so you still need to find your keywords that you want to rank for and this might be different to those that Google ranks you for.
Here’s a handy guide on how to find your Pinterest keywords:
1. Type your topic into Pinterest search
Example for our blog: “Bali travel”
Pinterest shows us AUTOCOMPLETE terms such as:
• Bali travel guide
• Bali itinerary
• Bali with kids
• Bali cafes
• Bali must see spots
These are our Pinterest keywords.
2. Look at the coloured “Guided Search” tiles
These are phrases people click often.
Example for our Bali travel example: Bali travel → budget, waterfalls, temples, first time, family
This helps you target VERY very specific, low-competition searches.
3. Use Pinterest Trends (free tool)
Where you search different keywords to see which have higher interest.
STEP 2 — Create Pinterest Boards That Match Your Blog Categories
Your Pinterest boards = is your content library.
You should aim to Create approx 10–15 boards based on your blog’s SEO clusters.
Examples for this blog are:
• A Best of Be Nothing Like Blog (this will incl. all pins from your blog and should be the first board your visitors see when they arrive on your Pinterest profile). You’ll want to pin to this board directly from your blog at a later time to make sure it showcases your blog with what readers can find.
The rest of the boards should be around your content pillars. i.e.
• Bali Travel Guide
• Bali Itinerary Ideas
• Meditation for Beginners
• Grounding Practices
• Soft Awakening
• Slow Living Inspiration
• Worldschooling Guides
• Family Travel Tips
• Eat Pray Love Bali Vibes
• Southeast Asia Travel
• Start A Blog
• Make Money Blogging
Setting up each board in this way means that each board has:
□ a keyword-rich title already (because we searched them in Step 1 so we know)
□ a keyword-rich description
□ is aligned with topics you will write about
OUR TIP: Pinterest ranks your account based on board theming. So theme for what you want to rank for! After you have created each board, Pinterest prompts you to add some pins to the new board.
Pinterest shows you a selection of pins which it thinks fit the title of that board. Pin around 10-20 pins which reflect the topic of the board, to help get your board of to a good start. To pin these suggested pins, all you need to do is click the red ‘PIN’ button and it will be automatically added to your newly created board.
Repeat this process until you have a good selection of boards which reflect the main topics of your blog.
STEP 3 — Create 3–5 Pins for EVERY Single Blog Post
Each blog post that we write becomes multiple pins for Pinterest and this is how you multiply your reach. So every blog post gives you 3-5 keywords worth of reach which means the right people are finding the right content for them.
If 3-5 feels to many, you should create at least one pin for each post on your blog. If you already have a blog and haven't been using Pinterest a great way to boost traffic fast is to go back to your blog and create pins for all your existing blog posts.
Once you have done that, you can just create a new pin each time you create a new blog post and make this your regular practice.
You'll want to make different style pins per post.
As a guide we typically do the following style pins Per blog post:
✔ 1 standard pin (vertical graphic)
✔ 1 idea pin (like a mini-story)
✔ 1 photo-only pin
✔ 1 text-based pin
✔ 1 “quote from blog” pin (optional but great)
That’s 3–5 pins from just one blog post. But that really targets a specific person looking for our exact content.
OUR TIP; Do not worry about “over pinning” — Pinterest actually WANTS volume.
STEP 4 — Design Pins That Actually Get Clicks
Once you have all your boards set up, the next step is to start using Pinterest to promote your blog… with the pins you're going to make from this step!
You'll want to design your pins so they follow proven results of what pins work and don't and as a guide, we find that a high-performing pin typically has the following:
□ a tall 2:3 size (1000×1500 px) If you want a bit more room, you can push it as far as a 2:4 ratio (e.g. 600 pixels wide by 1200 pixels high), but no more or your pin will get cut off in the Pinterest feed.
□ bold readable text
□ contrasting colours
□ emotional or aspirational imagery
□ a clear promise (“Bali Itinerary for First Timers”)
□ your URL or logo small in the corner
And so we design our Pins in Canva to follow the above rules where we can.
Canva is free to use and we love using it (see our Canva guide here), but other apps are suitable too such as Adobe or PicMonkey.
These are not hard and fast rules but more guides to show what works and what doesn't.
Pins that don’t work include pins where there is:
✘ too much text
✘ script or fancy swirly fonts
✘ dark photos
✘ unclear message
✘ tiny words
✘ “mystical” captions that don’t match search intent
Pinterest wants clarity. This is fairly obvious if you think in terms of what stands out for you when browsing a search engine or images.
You really want: very little text, straight to the point simple font to make it easily readable and clear, nice bright images that say what is is. Making you or me what to click through and see more.
So now we've got our pins you can pin directly in Pinterest or the best way is to add a pin to the blog post and pin directly from the blog. To do this you'll need to install the Pinterest Extension to your browser.
Pinning directly from our blog is purely A personal preference which is completely up to you. We just find that having a pinn-able image in your blog post, encourages others to pin your posts too which all helps.
Don't forget when pinning to always pin your pins to your ‘Best Of’ board too!
STEP 5 — Pinterest Title + Description SEO
Pinterest uses your text to then rank your pin so you really must write a title and Description for each pin. Failure to do so results in pins not getting ranked = seen and so there's really no point in creating beautiful visuals in the first place.
For each pin:
Write a Pinterest Title
□ that includes the main keyword
□ that is clear (eg. “Meditation for Beginners: Easy 5 Minute Practice”)
Write a Pinterest Description
□ that has 1–2 keyword-rich sentences in it
□ is natural-sounding (not stuffing keywords in because you're desperate to rank for it)
□ and it includes secondary keywords
For Example:
“Learn easy grounding techniques for beginners to feel calmer, centred and more connected. These simple grounding practices help regulate your nervous system and reduce anxiety naturally.” is a great Pinterest description for my grounding post here.
And I still need to create my pins for this new blog post.
That's still on my to do list which I share on my SEO blog Checklist here Point Number 14 in that - grab it free here)
STEP 6 — Pin Daily (but do it the easy way)
Pinterest rewards consistency so aim for a daily pinning strategy.
Best of all you don’t need to manually pin every day — use a scheduling tool (Tailwind or Pinterest’s own built-in scheduler) that allows you to batch create on a signle day but then schedule the pins to run all week.
What We Aim for with our Pinning Schedule is:
• 1–4 pins per day (scheduled)
• and we mix new pins + reshared pins
• 80% your content, 20% repins
We do this purely because Pinterest wants and rewards:
✔ consistency
✔ volume
✔ freshness
It’s obviously really important to pin YOUR OWN PINS onto your boards to drive traffic back to your blog.
But it’s also important to pin OTHER PEOPLE’S PINS onto all your boards too (except your ‘Best Of’ board because that’s just for your pins!).
Because you want to be known for pinning high quality, useful pins that help your audience. And you want Pinterest to see that you pin high quality pins that get lots of re-pins to get Pinterest to start showing your pins more in the searches / feeds of your audience. And the more your pins get seen and re-pinned, the more traffic you get back to your blog.
STEP 7 — Create Pinterest Idea Pins
Idea pins are Pinterest’s favourite format.
They get massive reach.
Create idea pins from each blog.
An example on this blog is:
• snippets of blog posts
• quotes from the content. Eg. for this blog that would be Quotes from our meditation content for example or each content pillar
• mini travel guides
• step-by-step grounding exercises
• our Bali photos
• “before/after inner peace” style messages
Note: this is all examples for our blog to give you examples of what you could include for your own blog. If you're struggling for content ideas on your own blog, drop us a comment below letting us know your blog and we'll help you with some pin ideas for your blog / website.
Idea pins are perfect for driving brand awareness — and now they CAN link to URLs again (Pinterest only added this back recently!)
STEP 8 — Monitor What Works
Because everything is all about learning and getting better you'll want to check in every 30 days or so to check the Pinterest Analytics to see what's working for you and what's not.
Things to check:
• your top performing pins
• top boards
• outbound clicks
• impressions
• search terms
Then repeat what’s working. If it's clear to you that something is doing better than other things. Do more of that.
Pinterest growth is a snowball — it starts slow → then becomes steady → until consistency becomes explosive.
I hope the above really helped now it's time to tick off those Pinterest Jobs that you should aim for for each post that you publish.
