What Is Spirituality, for beginners ?

Let's look at why You Could You Be More Spiritual Than You Think?

Alright. I want to talk about spirituality, But not in the guru, ultra-woo-woo stuff you might see online. Because I get, that for some people it’s too much, it’s to far out and you might not even feel like you are “spiritual” or you might just feel a bit weird when you think about spirituality.

I get that. I felt the same, so I want to talk to you today and break this down a bit.

I'm going to answer some of the questions that were going through my mind and some of the questions you might have about spirituality.

So, if you are just starting to question things and thinking there's more out there. Read on.

Topics like these, which you can jump to quickly if you are short on time;

Could you be having a Spiritual Awakening ?

So, what can be the signs that you are spiritual, or that at least, you might be more spiritual than you think. You might just be a feeling a bit different to other people. A bit like somethings not right, your thoughts are different, your views are different, things on the news on TV and in the newspapers, some of the things happening in the world don’t make sense to you anymore.

If you think a bit like this then stick around. Because guess what? You might be having a spiritual awakening.

I added a full video on this on my youtube channel

Why Do I Struggle With the Term “Spiritual Awakening”?

Ok, so I want to clear something up first.

For some reason I don’t like to say that I’m having a spiritual awakening. I don’t know why, but the phrase “spiritual awakening” kind of grates on me, it sounds a bit out there, a bit pretentious. It could be because it sounds a bit religious.

So, how do I describe what’s going on for me and so many others are feeling and experiencing?

Well, instead of focussing on the label. I just want to talk about it. A bit about spirituality, what it feels like, coming at it maybe from a more non-spiritual point of view.

Aimed more at the men, the lads, the blokes, but not exclusively. This is for anyone, whatever you identify as who feels like they would like a bit of clarity.

I like to look at this from the lens of someone that’s still relatively new to this. Not a guru, just a normal person who wants to feel something more. To feel connected.

So, if you are feeling these things. Maybe you could be more spiritual than you think. Maybe you are having a spiritual awakening…. Oh shit, I just said it again didn’t I.

How they say a Spritual Awakening is "meant" to feel

So What Is Spirituality, Really?

Now spirituality isn’t about being perfect. It doesn’t have to be such a “thing”.

It’s not about chanting on a mountaintop or owning 47 crystals.

For me and maybe for you, spirituality is just this simple pull…This curiosity…This feeling that there’s more to life than the everyday grind. More than the crap that you see going on. More than the everyday get up, go to work, go home, go to bed. Rinse and repeat.

It’s the sense that there’s something deeper happening inside you… just that there’s something a bit more out there.Even if you don’t have the language for it yet.

Could You Be Spiritual and Not Even Know It?

A lot of people think spirituality means you need to meditate for hours a day or drink green juice or stop doing anything you like that is “non spiritual”… but honestly, most people start their spiritual journey without realising they’re on one.

The key thing for me is, you don’t suddenly have to decide “I’m spiritual” you don’t have to announce it to anyone and everyone. Change your life and be a different person.

It’s not like a big awakening where you wake up and decide to run off to tibet and become a monk.

You might just be noticing that something feels off in your life. Or that the world around you doesn’t make sense anymore.

Maybe you’re starting to question things; the news, society, the way we’re supposed to live.

Maybe you’re feeling a bit disconnected from old patterns, old environments, even old friendships.

You might just be feeling a bit kind of lost, and a bit like you want a new direction. And you’re wondering if anyone else feels the same.

They do.

And you’re not weird. You’re waking up. And that’s ok.

What Is Intuition vs Logic? Why Does Something Feel “Off”?

Your brain is split into 2 sides. The left side is logical, analytical. The right side is more intuition, feeling and creativity.

The best way I can explain is when you’re young, you’re a kid, you live mostly in the right side.

You play, you want to go to space. You get some boxes, you make a space ship and you go to space. Simple. In your mind you are a spaceman.

As you get older, you stop playing, you go to school, you get taught stuff, you go to college, you get a job. You stop playing. You are forced to live by your left brain.

Imagine if you were in the office one day and started playing spaceman. People would look at you like you had absolutely lost your shit.

But when you are young and you do it, you don’t care,  you believe it. You are a spaceman and that pile of cardboard boxes will fly you to the fucking moon.

That’s the right side of your brain.

So the right side of your brain can come up with things and tell you things, like you are a spaceman. You are in space. But the left side of you’re brain says no you are not, you are 42 years old, you are in the office, stop being an idiot.

That’s an extreme example, but this battle is going on.

Both sides work together to form an opinion, a thought. This then impacts your actions.

You might be feeling something, like a feeling in your gut, telling you something. But then shutting it down, because it doesn’t make sense.

This is the fight between your left and right brain.

ree

A brain of 2 halves

For most of my life, I lived in my logical brain, the left side. The practical, analytical, ‘be sensible’ side, because to function in modern life, you kibd of have to.

But I always felt things. Said things that I thought, dressed how I wanted, even though it was seen as crazy. This was the creative, the right side of my brain.

But, to fit in, to be “normal” you have to live by the left side.

But at the start of my own spiritual journey… I kept getting these feelings in my gut. Like something was wrong. Something wasn’t adding up.

I’d watch the news and think,“This doesn’t feel right”. “This is bull shit”.

I’d be in a meeting or a situation and feel this pull saying,“You’re not supposed to be here”. “This is boring, go do something different”.

That was my intuition. The right side of the brain, that fun loving, creative, expressive, soulful part and it was trying to get my attention.

And your intuition does the same.It whispers before it shouts.

So if you are hearing things like this. Don’t be afraid to just feel them and listen.

Then see where they take you.

Can Music and Raving Be Spiritual Experiences?

This feeling of being different took me somewhere, so here’s an everyday example.

And here’s something I didn’t realise for years…I was spiritual long before I ever meditated.

It happened in clubs. In raves. In old warehouses, in Manchester with sweat dripping off the ceilings at 4am on a Sunday in January.

The scene of my first spiritual experience - The dancefloor of Sankeys Soap Manchester

As a clubber — and later as a DJ — music wasn’t just music.

It moved me.

A kick drum could shift my whole mood. A breakdown could give me goosebumps. A lyric could unlock something emotional I didn’t even know needed to come out.

You know those nights where the whole room is moving as one, when everyone has their hands in the air during a breakdown and bang, the bass kicks in, everyone starts to dance and you literally feel it in your heart, in your whole body....... Literally in your very soul.

Where strangers feel like family.Where everything feels free and connected and alive.

That’s spirituality. That’s energy. That’s frequency. That’s your soul remembering what it feels like to be free.

We just didn’t call it that because we were in a basement instead of a meditation centre.

Is Feeling Different From Society Actually a Good Thing?

I want to talk about something important… Because if you’re reading this, maybe you’re feeling it too.

Maybe you feel different to everyone around you.Your friends, your family, your coworkers. They seem fine with the system, the grind, the small talk.

Sure, they moan about it, but they just carry on. Feeling fed up and trudging through shit.

And you’re just… not.

You’re thinking deeper. You’re craving meaning. You’re questioning things you never questioned before.

And you might feel alone.

But it doesn’t even have to be this deep, you might just feel a bit off with life. Or like there’s something wrong with you.

There isn’t.

This is normal. This is part of waking up.

Some people go their whole life feeling that nudge and ignoring it.

You’re not. Well done you. You are feeling it. Welcome on board.

Is It Actually Okay to Be Weird?

So look I think one of the most important things to realise about yourself in this type of situation is this:

It’s Okay to Be Weird (It's Actually a Superpower)

Let me be real for a moment…I’ve always been different.

Growing up in Manchester, I dressed like a cross between a hippie and a raver.I thought differently, looked differently, saw the world differently.

And society makes you think being different is a problem. But actually that’s where your magic is.

Being weird?

Being the outsider?

Feeling like you don’t quite fit in?

That’s the sign you’re supposed to create your own path. Not follow someone else’s.

Spiritual Punk is literally built on that idea — you can grow, evolve, expand… and still be unapologetically you.

I wrote a full post on me and what it means to be a SPIRITUAL PUNK so, if you want to know more about what is a SPIRITUAL PUNK then have a read here.

So, what it does it mean to be spiritual ?

Is There One “Right Way” to Be Spiritual?

Now here’s something else I want to say.

Your Spiritual Journey Is Personal.

And here’s the thing a lot of people don’t say…There’s no ‘one way’ to be spiritual.

You don’t need to belong to a group. You don’t need to give yourself a label. You don’t need to act a certain way.

Your spiritual journey is yours.Private.Personal. Unique.

Whether you find yourself through meditation… or music… or nature… or journaling… or raving until sunrise… it’s all valid.

What matters is that you’re listening to yourself.

I have found that when you speak to someone about spirituality, sometimes it can start to become like a competition. Like people feel the need to THE most spiritual person in the room. To be THE most awakened one.

I can't be arsed with that vibe.

Just do you, do what feels right. I like to meditate in a morning, have a beer with some tunes on in the evening. This is what I do, I mean I put some incense on whilst I do it, but it’s about being in the moment.

That’s fine.

It’s about doing what makes you feel good.

I know this sounds like i'm trying to do that competition thing when I say this, but ah well, here we go.

A buddhist monk once told me, "Life is all about balance."

I agree with that. It's one of the best pieces of advice I'ver been given

So, if you are feeling like this then you could be more spiritual than you think.

So that’s what this channel is about.

Spirituality for real people.

People who think differently.

People who’ve felt the shift but don’t resonate with the typical spiritual stereotypes.

I’m building this channel from the beginning for people like me, people like you.

Sharing what I’ve learned and for me, this is the exciting bit, sharing what I’m still learning. There’s so much to learn, to know, to experience. So much wisdom to gain and I’m going to share it all.

And I’m building a community for anyone who feels a little lost, a little different, a little awake.

So if this resonates…If something inside you is going, ‘Yeah… that’s me’…

Stick around.

I'm going to be diving deeper into the topic of What is Spirituality ? A little deeper in my next post, so stay tuned for that.
