A Historical Overview
The hippie movement blossomed in the mid-20th century, fuelled by a quest for peace, love, and freedom. By the late 1960s, Ibiza became a refuge for those seeking an escape from societal norms. Attracted by the island's stunning landscapes, warm climate, and welcoming atmosphere, many young people flocked to Ibiza, drawn by the promise of a new way of life.
In 1969, the island hosted the first-ever International Festival of Music, attracting artists and musicians from around the globe. This event solidified Ibiza’s reputation as a creative haven. The early hippies embraced communal living, self-expression, and a connection to nature, creating a unique subculture that flourished on the island. There is still a strong hippy community in Ibiza and the boho vibe runs throughout as can be seen in the clothes shops around the island as well as the hippy markets that we love to visit every time we're there.
The Hippie Markets
One of the most tangible remnants of this era can be found in Ibiza's famous hippie markets, where the spirit of the 60s and 70s lives on. These markets are not just places to shop; they are vibrant cultural hubs filled with artistry, music, and a sense of community.

A Day At Benirras Ibiza Hippy Market
Today, we visit Benirras Ibiza Hippy Market - Mercadillo de Benirràs - On the same on the same beach in San Juan. Benirras hippy market has over 30 stalls with arts and crafts such as handmade pieces of jewellery, boho clothes. Whilst there, I bought a gorgeous silk dress, the kids bought bracelets and Si bought meditation beads (that you'll see him wearing daily on al of vids / photos - loves mandala beads that boy!). Come see what we bought below
WE think Benirra's is the best hippy market in Ibiza for 6 reasons:
It's pretty big.
It's not overly busy - there's space to move around with kids.
And it's right near the beach (like a few metres up from it) where you can then get to have a cooling drink after your shopping at one of the front bar / restaurants (it's not overcrowded / overbuilt there too so the drink is relaxed)
You can make the whole day of it, by spending the day at the beautiful beach - perfect for kids as it's calm waters and soft sand. Sand is stoney at shore line but not so bad that the kids need water shoes.
The beach gets an amazing sunset. One of the best You'll ever see in Ibiza and the world. Bold statement I know! But it isn't known as 'The Finger of God' for no reason.
And And double and, as you're right on the beach, you might see the hippies drumming as the sunsets which is A MUST SEE. Check out our Benirra's Drumming Video on YouTube. It's a double date here!
Other draws but they're not going on my reasons to go list, beacsue it would be quite embarrassing if I got excited about these things. BUT they certainly help life situation:
The Benirra's market is right next to the parking, with a quick walk to beach.
Once at the Benirràs hippy market you won't get hassled to buy. We HATE this. You will find a hippie laid back atmosphere where you can wander around at leisure. And even in your bikini if you like. No pressure here. Come as you are. Good vibes. The ibiza way.
Opening Times of Benirra's Hippy Market:
Opens approximately from 12 up to 24 hours (depending on the weather).

In fact FORCE YOU TO GO because you will not be disappointed! Go check out the Hippy Market Beach Drums video here for what vibe to expect. And drop me a comment on the video - I want to know that you are going / went / and what you thought! Enjoy!!
